What Are the 8 Stages of EMDR?

8 stages of EMDR therapy

At Autumn Leaves Psychiatry, we often work with individuals who feel stuck in the effects of past trauma, anxiety, or distressing life experiences. One of the most common questions we hear is, “What actually happens during EMDR therapy?” The process follows the 8 stages of EMDR, which are clearly defined. Each stage is designed to support safety, healing, and long-term relief. EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process unresolved memories so they no longer feel overwhelming in the present

Stage 1: History Taking and Treatment Planning

The first stage focuses on getting to know you and your story. We take time to understand your symptoms, life experiences, and therapy goals. Together, we identify target memories or patterns that may be contributing to emotional distress and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Stage 2: Preparation

Before any memory processing begins, we make sure you feel grounded and supported. This stage includes education about EMDR, what to expect during sessions, and the development of coping and self-soothing skills. The goal is to help you feel confident and emotionally safe throughout the process.

Stage 3: Assessment

In this phase of the 8 stages of EMDR, a specific memory is selected for processing. We identify the image, negative belief, emotions, and physical sensations associated with that memory. You will also identify a positive belief you would prefer to hold instead. This step sets the foundation for effective reprocessing.

Stage 4: Desensitization

This is the stage most people associate with EMDR. Using bilateral stimulation such as guided eye movements or tapping, the brain begins to process the memory. Over time, emotional intensity decreases, and the memory becomes less distressing. You remain fully aware and in control during this process.

Stage 5: Installation

Once the distress around the memory has reduced, we focus on strengthening the positive belief you identified earlier. This helps reinforce healthier self-perceptions and supports emotional healing at a deeper level.

Stage 6: Body Scan

Trauma often lives in the body, not just the mind. During the body scan, you are guided to notice any remaining physical tension connected to the memory. If discomfort is present, additional processing helps the body release stored stress.

Stage 7: Closure

Each session ends with a focus on emotional stability. We ensure you leave feeling grounded and supported, even if the memory is not fully processed yet. You may also receive techniques to manage emotions between sessions.

Stage 8: Reevaluation

At the beginning of the next session, we revisit previously processed memories to assess progress. This allows us to confirm lasting relief and determine next steps in treatment. Healing is evaluated over time, not rushed.

Why EMDR Is So Effective

The 8 stages of EMDR are structured to allow healing to happen in a way that feels organized, safe, and collaborative. Many clients experience significant relief without needing to relive trauma in detail or talk through every aspect of the experience.
