Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Depression isn't easy. For people who have not found relief from antidepressants, NeuroStar is a safe and proven alternative treatment for depression without the side effects of medication.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

TMS

WHAT IS TMS?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) offers a non-invasive means of triggering brain activity. This treatment method utilizes magnetic fields to activate the brain's natural electrical response.

This form of stimulation is a safe, effective, non-drug depression treatment that uses focused magnetic pulses similar to an MRI. This process revitalizes connections in an area of the brain involved in regulating mood. When these connections are weakened, many people experience measurable relief from their symptoms.

This method is used to treat varying mental health and brain-related issues from migraines, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

DOES TMS HURT?

The most common side effects for NeuroStar TMS reported during clinical trials were headache and scalp discomfort —generally mild to moderate—occurring less frequently after the first week of treatment.

IS TMS PROVEN?

Developed in 1985, TMS treatment are widely used throughout the world to produce measurable results. Consistent TMS of the brain has shown to reverse the symptoms of depression in 70% of those treated.

Especially for those with treatment-resistant depression (TRD), TMS provides non-invasive methods of triggering the brain without using medications. Patients are twice as likely to see results compared to antidepressant medications and standard therapy.

  • 83% of patients that completed treatments had a decrease in depression symptoms.
  • 62% of these patients saw full remission.

The most common conditions TMS treats are:

  • Depression
  • Smoking cessation
  • Migraines
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)

Absolutely. Other than slight headaches and scalp discomfort, TMS leaves minimal side-effects to patients which diminish in frequency after the first week.

Some TMS therapy is approved by the FDA for adolescents between the ages of 15 - 21. Eligibility is dependent on not having:

  • Epilepsy
  • Common seizures
  • Metal in the head/skull
  • Cranial implants

Although every patient reacts differently to treatment, up to half of all patients notice a decrease or even an absence of previous symptoms. This can be noticeable in:

  • Change of mood
  • Receptive to other therapies
  • Productive daily habits
  • Additional relief
  • Increase in energy

The effects of TMS treatment aren't permanent, but are shown to last anywhere from 9 months to multiple years. Every patient reacts differently to their own treatment, so results may vary.

Treatment sessions are recommended anywhere between 4 - 6 weeks with daily administration. Patients typically take 3 - 20 minutes to complete daily treatment depending on their individual response and stimulation.

For most patients, 36 individual treatments are recommended to complete TMS therapy.
